The Ouessant boys

Our four little wether sheep have celebrated their first year at the vineyard. They are all half brothers from the same ram who didn’t make the grade as breeding males but have a bright future here as lawnmowers. They arrived with names and very individual personalities. There is older brother Jiminy Cricket who is the greediest and bossiest and recognisable by his crumbly horn ends; Harry Potter who thinks the grass is always greener and likes to sniff the air and look wistfully into the distance; Hocus Pocus who has the curliest horns and friendliest smile, and Gandalf who is also cuddly and loves a scratch. They are from a primitive French island breed and so far have proved hardy and fun-loving, if disobedient. Our attempts to keep them within an electric fence failed, so they now have the run of the vineyard, except around in and around harvest, and enjoy a mixed diet of hedgerow, grass, low-hanging vine leaves and sheep nuts. They survived their first summer blade shearing by Georgina and now have thick winter coats back, looking twice the size.
